A Space for Thoughtful, In-Depth Exploration
Dr. Alex Rowell is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice offering psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy to adults. His practice is dedicated to creating a space for thoughtful, in-depth exploration of the inner life, where emotional suffering can be approached not simply as something to be relieved, but as something to be understood.
Dr. Rowell works with individuals experiencing anxiety, stress, depression, relationship difficulties, burn out, questions of identity, and moments of personal or professional impasse.
At the heart of his work is how our present experience is often shaped by unconscious patterns and formative relationships that remain active beyond awareness. Psychoanalytic treatment offers an opportunity to encounter these patterns with greater clarity, and in doing so, to open the possibility of meaningful and lasting change.

Philosophy
Depth Over Immediacy
Dr. Rowell provides a confidential, attentive, and thoughtfully reflective setting in which patients can speak freely, examine difficult experiences, and feel listened to with care, curiosity, and clinical precision. His approach is grounded in psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, and attachment-informed psychotherapy, with close attention to the emotional patterns, relationships, conflicts, and past experiences that continue to shape a person’s life in the present.
Rather than offering formulaic advice or pursuing a quick reduction of symptoms alone, Dr. Rowell works with patients to understand what may be happening beneath the surface. This includes exploring recurring relationship patterns, unspoken fears, internal conflicts, defenses, and the ways earlier experiences may influence how a person relates to themselves and others.
The work is collaborative, but it is also appropriately challenging. Patients are supported in developing a more honest and nuanced understanding of their emotional lives while gradually becoming more able to tolerate difficult feelings, recognize longstanding patterns, and respond with greater freedom and choice. Over time, therapy can help create not only relief from distress, but a deeper sense of self-understanding, emotional vitality, and capacity for more secure and meaningful relationships.
Dr. Rowell values depth over immediacy and recognizes that lasting psychological change often unfolds through sustained therapeutic work. His aim is to offer patients a relationship in which they can think more deeply, feel more fully, and develop a richer, more integrated relationship with themselves and the lives they are choosing to build.

A Distinct Form of Conversation
Psychodynamic therapy offers a different kind of conversation—one that moves beyond advice, reassurance, or simply managing symptoms. It creates space to explore the feelings, relationships, conflicts, and patterns that may be shaping your life outside of your awareness. Through careful reflection, patients can begin to understand why certain difficulties keep returning, why particular relationships feel so charged, and how earlier experiences may continue to influence the present.
Over time, this deeper understanding can create greater freedom. Rather than reacting automatically or repeating familiar patterns, patients can develop more choice in how they relate to themselves and others. Psychodynamic therapy aims not only to reduce distress, but also to strengthen self-understanding, emotional resilience, and the capacity for more secure, meaningful, and fulfilling relationships.
